Vigor runs a cycling group aimed at beginner to intermediate cyclists. You can be a recreational cyclist or have specific goals such as competing in road cycling, mountain biking, triathlon or duathlon.
Vigor has a number of cycling coaches. There are generally two or three coaches at each group ride meaning we can split into different paced groups. The group rides have been going continuously since the start of 2006 which has seen hundreds of cyclists enjoy the benefits of professionally coached group training rides.
You can join the Vigor Cycling Group by becoming a Vigor member. This gives you access to a year of coached cycling sessions and support for your goal events. It also gives you discounts at the Vigor Clinic and weekly e-newsletter of all things cycling.
Maps of some of the rides we do can be found below, courtesy of Cycling Profiles.
The Cycling Sessions
6:30am: Spin at the Vigor Studio – BYO bike and set it up on the Kurt Kinetic Rock ‘n’ Rollers. Brad will take you through a session of focused efforts to improve your performance on the bike. This is a great way to build up your fitness.
6:30am: Cycle – Meet at the Vigor studio to ride two laps (approx 30km) of the Yarra Boulevard (Kew). If you need to ride on to work you can leave your bag at the Vigor Studio. The session starts with an easy lap, spinning to ride as a group, the second lap is generally stronger depending on what you’re up to; if you’re feeling frisky you can do efforts up the hills. During winter and if it’s wet, we ride indoors (see below).
7:30am: Cycle – Meet at the Vigor Studio for a 2-5 hour cycle. Generally those that turn up plan the ride ahead which usually means a short and long option. We head north to Eltham and Kinglake regions and we usually have coffee or brunch when we get back. See the links above for maps of each of the rides.
When it’s raining / Wednesday winter rides
The sessions are always on – meeting at the same time and place, we just go indoors on the Kurt Kinetic Rock n’ Rollers if it’s wet and on Wednesday mornings during winter. We put on a DVD and pedal in comfort for an hour or so. This is a great way to keep your regular fitness up over winter and work as hard as you like.
The Kurt Kinetic Rock n’ Rollers give a safe and more realistic ride than any other indoor trainers. They do not damage the bike’s frame or tyres. It is best to just show up at the start time and the decision of whether to ride in or outdoors will be made then.
All outdoor cycle sessions are covered with your yearly Vigor membership. Indoor Spin sessions are $10 first time and then you can use a Vigor Group Exercise Pass (VGEP). Check the membership page for current pricing of the VGEP or pay $15 casual.
We can take private or group one hour lessons; $85 for 1, $50 per person for 2 or more (Vigor members get a $10 discount if it’s a one on one). This session will focus on safety, technique and tips to improve your cycling ability.
In addition to this you can add another hour session for video analysis, this can be arranged as a group so you can learn from each other.
If you would like to make a time or have any questions we are happy to help you get started.
With so many events to choose from, it helps to get advice from us to choose the right one for you. It is also much more enjoyable to do events as a team, here are a selection of events we run or support:
King Valley Challenge – The 39km road cycle leg is the last leg of this multi-sport event and is a perfect challenge for everyone. It’s got a great hill climb! Join a team or have a go solo.
Lake Eildon Challenge – The 98km road cycle leg is the first leg of this multi-sport event and takes you on some of the best roads very few see. You cycle from Mansfield to Eildon via Jamieson.
Seight Challenge Series – Vigor Cycling is the official training provider for the four recreational events organised by Cycling Victoria throughout the year. We always send a team of cyclists to participate.
Vigor Cycling is the training provider for Melbourne Adventure (MA Cycling). There are many other events in road cycling, mountain biking and triathlon / duathlon, click on these links for each state/national association. Melbourne Adventure is bound to have some members competing in most events so speak with Liam if you want to find a racing buddy.
Vigor Strava Challenges – We have set up specific Vigor segments on Strava for you to race against the clock and fellow Vigor Cyclists, all you have to do is join up with Strava and join the ‘Vigor Cycling’ team. These rides will be advertised as group rides via the email group and facebook, but you can do them anytime as often as you like!
